I think I’d be a lot happier if I had no mortgage and a zillion dollars, but you know, that’s an unattainable. There are plenty of things that we can do though that will make us all happier individuals without winning the lotto. Also, the odds are in our favour on these simple tricks.
1. Exercise, Just a Tad
You don’t need to see any physical changes in your physique to start feeling happier! Exercise helps raise your dopamine levels, and also lower stress levels in the short and long term.
2. Be outside at 13.9°C
A study by the American Meteorological Society investigated the relationship between weather and peoples moods. What it found was that subjective happiness is related to temperature. The optimum happiness is maximized at 13.9°C. Humidity, wind speed, precipitation, and sunshine—are not significant.
3. Sleep More
You already know that if you weren’t so wrecked all the time you’d enjoy yourself more.
You already know that if you weren’t so wrecked all the time you’d enjoy yourself more. You don’t need a scientist to tell you that your amygdala that processes negative stimuli isn’t affected by sleep deprivation as much as your hippocampus which process postive memories does. Or maybe you did. The end result is that you can recall negativity faster than you can postivity when you’re sleep deprived.
4. Plan A Trip
You don’t even need to TAKE the trip. You just need to plan it. Well, sort of. A study in the journal Applied Research in Quality of Life found that vacationers reported a higher degree of pre-trip happiness, compared to non-vacationers, possibly because they are anticipating their holiday. Only a very relaxed holiday trip boosts vacationers’ happiness further after return.
5. Get Older
Studies have found that older people are generally more happier, and actively seek ways of becoming happier by pruning friend circles that may bring them down and just generally taking less shit from people.
So maybe all you need to do is live life and get outside a bit more.
