Listening is an artform, and not being good at it can alienate the people around you. Sometimes I can be a terrible listener. My mouth is on autopilot going “Mmhmm”, “Oh yeah?” and “Totally!” but I’m not taking anything in. But that isn’t even listening, that’s hearing. No emphasis or vital information is being picked up.
Bad listeners aren’t just people that aren’t paying attention though. We all know people who talk over the top of everyone else, and steamroll through everyone else’s conversations.
A good leader listens though, and it can expand you on an intellectual level as well as make you work better with people.
CT Business travel has pulled together an infographic that analysis whether you yourself are a good listener, and nine tips for how to improve, even if you’re really good already! There’s always room to improve!
