With the Pinot Gris grapes normally preferring cooler climates the wine growers at Mills Reef chose Maraekakaho, a sub-region of Hawke’s Bay, for their reserve Pinot Noir.
The area enjoys a temperate climate moderated throughout summer by cooling afternoon breezes. The reserve wines are from low yielding vines that will produce superior grapes and according to their wine grower, 2016 has produced clean, healthy flavoursome fruit. I tasted their estate Pinot Gris late last year and found it outstanding.
This Pinot Gris takes it to a brand new level Winemaker’s Tasting Notes: this highly appealing single-vineyard Pinot Gris from low yielding vines brims with pear, lychee and lemon citrus notes, and ginger spice hints. The palate is luscious, yet refined, with a smooth satisfyingly long finish. Food match: a beautifully balanced wine, for enjoyment on its own, or paired with food.
