I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, breakfast is by far the best meal of the day. It’s no secret that if you are trying to lose weight, a good breakfast is key and choosing a nutritionally sound breakfast could go a long way in helping to boost your weight loss efforts.
Eating a breakfast that is rich in protein is important as it will help to keep you fuller for longer and reduce cravings later on in the day. When people think high protein breakfast they generally think of eggs, dairy and meat, however a new study has found that opting for a plant-based protein source may actually be better than animal protein.
A new study conducted by University of Copenhagen found that above all else, beans and peas are the ideal breakfast food for weight loss and maintenance. While animal sourced protein is generally believed to be more filling, the study found that plant-based protein exceeds all else because it has more fibre.
The study enlisted the help of a group of men and for several weeks, researchers fed some of the men a breakfast of a meat patty and the others a high-protein patty made of legumes. The study found that the men who ate the legume patty consumed an average of 12 percent less calories at lunchtime and reported feeling fuller for longer.
While both patties contained the same amount of protein, the fibre in the legumes was credited for keeping the plant-based group fuller for longer, making it a more suitable protein source for those who are trying to lose weight. While it may seem like a strange idea to eat legumes such as beans, chickpeas, lentils, and peas for breakfast, incorporating these foods into your breakfast could leave you feeling satisfied for longer, making it easier to avoid unnecessary snacking and overeating.
