We all know that blondes have a reputation for being, well… dumb. Think Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie in the time-honoured classic The Simple Life.
Blondes all around the world will be pleased to know however that a new study has once and for all proven that the dumb blonde stereo-type is not true, with the study concluding that blonde women have basically the same IQ as women of other hair colours.
The study that was conducted by Ohio State University surveyed 10,878 Americans and found that women who had naturally blonde hair had had an average IQ score within 3 points of women with darker hair.
Contrary to popular belief, the study actually found that women with naturally blonde hair generally had a slightly higher average IQ than women of other hair colours, however author of the study Jay Zagorsky says that this finding isn’t statistically significant.
“I don’t think you can say with certainty that blondes are smarter than others, but you can definitely say they are not any dumber,” says Zagorsky.
While blonde jokes may seem harmless, Zagorsky says that they can often have very real implications that can lead to blondes being disadvantaged and discriminated against.
“Research shows that stereotypes often have an impact on hiring, promotions and other social experiences,” says Zagorsky. “This study provides compelling evidence that there shouldn’t be any discrimination against blondes based on their intelligence.”
The results for men were similar, with blonde men having roughly the same IQ as men with other hair colours.
So… if blondes aren’t actually dumb, how do you explain this?
Apparently there are some things that even science can’t explain.
