People of the world can rejoice, if you drink more alcohol than your peers it’s probably because you’re smarter than them. A study done by Psychology Today revealed that intelligent people tend to drink more than their dimmer counterparts. This is great news for those of us that enjoy a vino or a beer at the end of a busy day (read: everyday) or those of us that like to indulge in a few too many martinis on the weekend.
This is most likely due to evolution. (Isn’t everything?)This is because alcohol is not really a substance that occurs in high quantities naturally. When it does occur, from rotting fruit, it usually has a pretty low percentage and isn’t really enough to get you drunk. So to actually have something that would make you drunk would require someone to intentionally make it. Thus, the people that were able to create these drinkable, tipsy-making, beverages would have had to be the brighter ones in the bunch. The study states that “more intelligent individuals may be more likely to prefer drinking modern alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, and distilled spirits) than less intelligent individuals, because the substance and the method of consumption are both evolutionarily novel.”
This is very interesting considering most people would jump to the assumption that if you drink more then you’re probably not as sharp as those that abstain from drinking, when in fact it’s the other way around. This is definitely good news for us indeed.
Obviously we’re not condoning binge drinking or getting absolutely wasted all the time. But if you enjoy drinking alcohol in a safe and controlled way, then it’s probably just because you’re in the smarter half of the population.
So pour that bubbly, sip that gin, and don’t feel ashamed about it because you’re probably a genius.
