He’s 22 years old with no formal training but this local boy is making waves on Instragram with his brightly coloured cakes.
Hailing from Auckland, Niuafe Junior Malupo now has his own business Niu Cakery in New Lynn which opened last year and due to his booming popularity online, is now booked solid through to August. In 2014, Malupo dropped out of his business management course to pursue cake making, working at Hallensteins to support himself – but gave it up in 2015 to dedicate all his time to his sweet creations. Posting his cakes to Facebook, he started getting requests for more delicious creations for birthdays, weddings and special occasions – he even has regular customers now. “People started to message me […] asking if I could do some cakes.”
Another cake from the weekend requested by Patricia All the way from Australia, for her niece’s birthday. She wanted a barn animal themed cake so we to do a brown cow for the bottom tier and a cute piggy for the middle tier topped with colourful candy. Thanking my gal pal @miss_bon_bon_nz For helping with the faces cause guuurl Im useless with fondant. Sending all my love to my good friend @sennabags_ for helping me out last weekend or I would be dead by now. Also just letting everyone know my mobile is broken and is getting repaired! Fml zzzz

Inspired by Australian cake queen Katherine Sabbath on Instagram and with skills crafted over years of helping his mum in the kitchen, Malupo’s colourful creations are giving everyone a sweet tooth with their unique designs. While Malupo has always been passionate about baking, he did not know he could pursue it as a career until he saw another Kiwi baker online. “One day I went through Instagram and I saw another cake-maker from New Zealand. I saw their cakes and I was like: ‘What the hell? I can do that’.” Through hard work and late nights making cakes, Malupo has baked himself a career and now has almost 20,000 followers on Instagram and 10,000 on Facebook. He doesn’t mind working hard though, saying that the reaction of his customers “makes everything worth it”.
Malupo’s Single-tier cakes start at $100 while three-tier creations can cost up to $465. Visit niucakery.com to book your own imaginative Kiwi creation.
