The most popular New Zealand baby names for 2016 have been revealed by Nameberry and it seems to be the year of the A names with Amelia, Ava, Arabella, Aurora and Adeline all taking spots in the girl’s top 10 with Charlotte dropping to third place from first in 2015. Isla, Isabella and Mia fill out the rest of the list. The biggest jumps in popularity are Sadie, which rose 48 spots as well as Astrid, Elise and Isabella which shot up more than 30 spots apiece, but Olivia is the name that takes the crown this year.
Unusual names that have joined the girl’s top 100 are Anouk, Cecilia, Freya, and Ophelia while the boy’s list welcomes Alistair, Hugo, and Lucian.
Meanwhile, the top five boy’s names have all retained their order from last year: Ezra, Asher, Atticus, Declan and Oliver. While Milo, Silas, Levi, Wyatt and Henry finish the list off – Levi and Wyatt are new contender to the top ten list. More familiar names grace the top 40 – John, Tobias, Daniel, Xavier, and Maxwell but there is another name catching everyone’s attention.
The controversial name Aryan took the trophy for hottest boy’s name for the first half of 2016. Aryan rose 49 places in 2016 and is now sitting as 697 on the US list. Reported to mean “warrior” and “honourable”, the name’s ties to white supremacy have not gone unnoticed and it is catching the attention of online media.
