How does blackcurrant oil help the skin?
Blackcurrant Seed Oil is very rich in antioxidants and gamma-linolenic acid making it a highly effective anti-inflammatory agent, is vitamin rich and also contains steriodonic acid, also high amounts of omegas 3 and 6. gamma-linolenic and stearodonic acids are conditionally essential fatty acids, meaning your skin is unable to manufacture them, so must be obtained from your diet or applied topically.
The main antioxidant compounds present in blackcurrants are phenolics (including flavonoids and anthocyanins) and vitamin C.
The combination of New Zealand’s pristine environment, unpolluted air, high ultraviolet light intensity, and specially bred varieties results in our berries having some of the highest anthocyanin levels in the world. The antioxidants in this oil protects the skins cells from free radical induced damaged such as causing skin dryness, skin breakouts and inflammation. These free radicals originate from environmental pollutants such tobacco smoke, pesticides and air pollutants.
How do essential fatty acids such as GLA, Omega 3, 6 and 9 benefit the skin?
Topical EFAs have been shown to improve the structure and function of cell membranes and improve skin barrier function. Improving skin barrier function reduces trans-epidermal water loss, leaving the skin more hydrated, moisturised and protected. While other moisturisers may improve skin dryness, roughness and water loss, they are often temporary and do not biologically strengthen the integrity of the skin barrier as EFAs do. EFAs are protective agents against environmental insults such as detergents, bacteria, contact allergens11 or decreased humidity. They also enhance barrier recovery and wound healing after injury or stress.
What is the delivery system like?
The oil when gently rubbed into the skin, not only hydrates the skin cells but also nourish and replenish the cells underneath to repair and strengthen.
This oil is said to increase elasticity in the skin, and can be used to protect and nourish skin tissues preventing chronic skin conditions, such as dermatitis and eczema. It can also be used to slow premature aging.
Along with topical application for skin benefits, the blackcurrant oil has many other wonderful health benefits when included as part of a daily dietary intake.
