Being a Mother isn’t exactly a walk in the park – and one of the most dreaded moments for parents everywhere is when your kids decide to start taking on the road.
Learning to drive is an interesting experience for everyone, I can still remember my Mum clutching to the seat belt as I hurtled round the streets of Pukekohe and while it is a lot of fun, people under the age of 24 are more likely to be involved in car accidents and fatalities.
Luckily Holden have launched a safety program aimed at young drivers with the hopes of decreasing the number of accidents and fatalities on our roads. Holden spokesperson Marnie Samphier says the program has been two years in the making and is designed to focus on specific challenges that young drivers face.
“Statistics tell us that fatal crashes where the driver’s contribution is significant are more likely to involve drivers under 24 years. A lack of experience and awareness results in poor decision making on the roads and we believe this new programme can help address this area of concern. It is sometimes assumed that young driver accidents are predominantly drug and alcohol related, this is an issue, but 60 percent of all fatal crashes involving this age group do not feature either of these contributing factors.”
Champion motorsport driver, Greg Murphy, has been heavily involved in developing the programme, and will feature in the promotion and awareness-raising activities, along with internationally renowned road safety expert, New Zealander Peter Sheppard. Together they’ve helped create practice activities that will be incorporated into the Street Smart program.
The Street Smart program takes place over the course of one day during the school holidays and takes place in a controlled environment away from the open road – and other drivers!
Teens involved will experience a variety of scenarios and situations as they transition through 10 practical stations in their own car, accompanied by their parent or caregiver.
Some of the exercises throughout the day include:
- Head On Collison
- Following Too Close
- Emergency Braking
- Peripheral Vision
- Hazard Identification.
The course will be available in controlled environments throughout the country, and will be priced at $49. If you’re thinking about this for your child or want any more info, you can check out the Holden Street Smart website here.
