If you’re spending your days at work reminiscing over last Summer’s holiday, it may be time to start planning a new one. Although we live in a country full of beach holiday destinations there are plenty of cozy spots for a mid-year winter vacation.
Whether you’re a snow bunny or looking for a relaxing few days away these are definitely places you should check out.

Lake Taupo is one of my personal favourite places to visit during Winter. There’s just something magical about the lake at this time of year. It’s also a good place to stay if you’re wanting to visit some ski fields. It’s also home to De Bretts hot pools which are super relaxing. Just remember to wear lots of layers!
Tourist favourite Queenstown is beautiful at this time of year. The snowy mountains definitely send off some Lord of the Rings vibes. If you’re looking for things to do there have a little read of our Queenstown post.
"Wine, cheese and fire time inside @boomrocklodge. Spoiled with The Last Shepherd pinot noir and local cheeses – Kahurangi blue, Aorangi brie and three year aged cheddar. I'm sure you can totally understand why I didn't ever want to leave." Thanks for stopping by, @leantimms #WellyLikeALocal #sharemewlg
The capital is great in Winter as it has a lot of activities to do despite the weather. The city is full of good eateries and bars. There’s also Te Papa Museum.
West Coast South Island
The South Island really is beautiful during t he snowy months. The West Coast is a great place for skiers. Plus it’s home to Fox Glacier and Franz Josef glacier. This is also a great place to spy the great Southern Alps in all their snow tipped glory.
If you’re a skiing fanatic Canterbury is a must-see. Christchurch is a good place to set up base as it’s close to a variety of ski fields. Mt Hutt and Porters ski area are both within a two hour drive. Here there’s slopes for all different levels of skiers.
