These Are 2016’s Best NZ Hair Stylists and Salons

On Saturday night, I was lucky enough to attend the L’Oréal Style & Colour Trophy awards and get a taste of the talent and who’s who in the hairdressing world. With almost 300 hairstylists entering the competition back in May, the finalists were finally announced and awarded from one of the four major categories – Young Talent Award, Men’s Image Award, Salon of the Year Award and the  New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year.

Mathias Te Moananui from Buoy Salon and Spa in Wellington took home the prestigious award for New Zealand’s Hairdresser of the Year 2016. He will travel to Lisbon, Portugal in October to represent New Zealand and compete for the global title.

The L’Oréal Style and Colour Trophy Awards were judged by two top international stylists – New Zealand’s Stephen Marr and Australian hair icon and international educator Tracey Hughes. “Mathias’ look captured my attention because it is directional and relevant, but also a look that someone could see in a magazine and be inspired to try themselves,” Marr said. “Tracey and I were looking for an entry with a contemporary and effortless feel, and we found it in Mathias’ look. It’s editorial, it’s fresh, and it shows evidence of technical skill.”
