Photographer Spent 12 Years Photographing the Foetus Developing in The Womb

Swedish photographer Lennart Nilsson spent 12 years taking pictures of the foetus develop in the womb. The project, ‘A Child is Born’ was photographed using conventional cameras with macro lenses, an endoscope and scanning electron microscope. In 1965, Nilsson was the first person to photograph the human foetus from inside the womb.

His project has been considered a major breakthrough in medical photography. LIFE magazine published his project in a 16-page cover article and all 8 million copies were sold out in a few days. It is said to be one of LIFE magazine’s most important reportage along with the assassination of John F Kennedy and the First Moon Landing in 1969.

The following is a compilation of high-resolution images of how life is born.
