Few brother-sister singing duos have captivated us in the way that Angus and Julia Stone have, with their unique voices and melodic sounds. Recognised for their songs, Stay With Me, Big Jet Plane and Grizzly Bear, the Australian folk rock/indie pop duo are back with their fourth album, SNOW.
This album is a first for the duo, in that every song on the record they wrote together. “It was quite magical because Angus and I have never spent that much time together, just the two of us,” says Julia. “There’s always at least an engineer or tour manager but the last phase of writing and recording was just eight weeks of him and me and the quiet of the land. It was a beautiful time.”
Their soulful sound is a welcome retreat from the world of over synthesised pop. Their raw, powerful voices and instrumentals are shown in Nothing Else To Do, an acoustic breeze with Julia’s dreamy voice singing an effortless harmony – “There’s nothing else to do here but fall into your arms.” The rest of the album follows suit of Angus and Julia’s classic sounds that tell a story. Chateau is a song about contentment in time and place, while Cellar Door is intensely personal as they song about their grandfather’s funeral.
