Searching for a job is one of the most stressful things you will ever experience, whether you are out fresh out of uni, looking for a new job or facing a complete uphaul of your life – the job market is never easy nor is creating a CV.
Once you actually find a job that you are qualified for, the real fun begins – The joy that comes with writing a CV.
We know that we include our experience, education and skills (in what order no one really knows), but what else should we include to stand out from the crowd and make our CV jump from the maybe pile to the yes pile?
1. Include that you studied/lived/worked abroad on your CV
You might think that the time you spend ‘enjoying’ local culture (aka London’s pub scene and Italy’s pizza) might not be something your employees want to know, but it actually says a lot about you.
Vicki Salemi, career expert for Monster and a former corporate recruiter told Glamour you should add this to your CV because it ” demonstrates your ability to venture outside of your comfort zone—heck, outside of our culture.”
Also, it gives you worldly experiences. For me it gave me a lot of things to write about and share, for others it might have helped them show leadership skills, or the ability to adapt to completely different ways of life and working structures.
Plus, it makes you sound interesting!
2. Include that you are a mother on your CV
You may think that this will scare off potential employers from hiring you if you mention the adorable, albeit time consuming mini-mes in your life. This is especially relevant if you have a gap in your CV. Don’t believe me? We found a study that suggests including information could increase your chances of getting hired by up to 40%
3. Include social media links on your CV
No matter how much your love or hate the world’s fascination with sharing every detail of their life on line, hiring managers think it should be on your CV. Of course, this does depend on the job you are going for. “They can show you have a strong network and are up to speed with modern-day marketing and communications practices. The hiring manager will see that you like to keep up with what’s happening, and that you care about learning more,” Richie Frieman, author of Reply All [And Other Ways to Tank Your Career] told News.co.au. Just make sure everything is professional, and keep this in mind for your Insta stories etc.
