If you don’t want to sift through the millions of dating guides on the Internet, Reddit has come to the rescue. Aside from obvious things like planning a murder or smelling like a washed up boot, here is a helpful list on what not to do on that all-important first date.
“Talking about future children.” Always an instant turnoff, best just steer clear of this altogether. Maybe wait until you meet the parents before talking about mini-me’s…
“Complaining. A first date should be fun.” This one flip-flops a bit, as the patrons of Reddit describe: “If the complaining is going back and forth it could be one of the best icebreakers. It’s just as fun to bond over what you like as what you hate.” Still might pay to let them play the first card though.
“Being too pretentious or condescending.” User ‘honeyfloss‘ added; “Along this note – correcting your date constantly. ESPECIALLY if it’s you bluffing to sound smarter than you are, and/or it’s your date’s field of expertise.” Never a good look.[shortcode id=”33529″]
“Looking at your phone.” This one cropped up multiple times. I know it’s sometimes hard to tear yourself away from your virtual life, but if you managed to get as far as asking someone out on a date, and they say yes, you should at least pay them enough courtesy and respect to not check your friends Facebook group chat every fifteen seconds.
Here’s an interesting one you may not have heard of:
Things to talk about – F.O.R.D.
- Dreams (what they want to do with their life)
Things to not talk about – R.A.P.E.
Pretty self-explanatory, really. Although, as user ‘Tarcanus’ put it;
“This is only true if you’re younger, with the exception of extremes and the Rape and abortion bullet points.
When you’re younger, you don’t need to talk about religion and politics and you likely don’t have any kind of huge stable of exes to talk about. You have years yet before you realize you don’t want to waste your time dicking around in a relationship that isn’t going anywhere because of issues you never knew were issues until a year in because you never talked about it up front.
The general advice is to never bring up Religion or Politics, but the real advice should be “don’t bring up those topics as if you’re interviewing them to see if they pass the test”
Hopefully this gives you an idea of what to avoid on that first date, remember its a chance to see if you’re compatible! Have a bit of fun, be chill, and for the love of God don’t give them your business card afterward.
