MAD architects are expanding from their Beijing-based home and taking their radical vision for the future of apartments with them. The new UNIC apartment block in Paris will be set aside from the norm by floor plates that gradually taper as the building rises.
The UNIC block is set to be built in the newly developed Clichy-Batignolles area of Paris. It will overlook Martin Luther King park and cover an area of 1,033 sq m, with the building itself comprising 13 floors rising to 50 m. It was designed after workshops discussing issues such as sustainable community development, resource sharing, energy management and population demographics.
The wavy floors definitely make the building stand out, and the waves make for practical uses as well. Some spread further to create bigger balconies while some pull in a little bit more. The bigger curves offer room for trees to be planted as well as offering residents views of the Eiffel Tower as well as the surrounding city. Spoiler: it’s very pretty at night.
