Fat-shaming Forced Selena Gomez to Seek Therapy

It all seems a bit ridiculous that someone as beautiful as Selena Gomez fell victim to fat-shaming. She told UsWeekly on Wednesday that the criticism around her curvier figure and weight gain caused her to seek professional help. She said, “I’ve been working in therapy. I’d land at the airport and people would yell out, “You’re fat!” It was awful.”

In her latest interview with Billboard magazine, she said, “I was in a bikini and got publicly ripped for being overweight. That was the first time I’d experienced body shaming like that. I believed some of the words they were saying.”

In responding to the hateful messages, she posted a photo of herself on Instagram with the caption: “I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove

She told Billboard, “I’m so f–king nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me. I’ve been working since I was 7. I’ve been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17. It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story,” Gomez said. But she credits her critics as a driving force for this album: “The hate motivated me.”

Her new album cover for Revival is said to reflect her self-awareness and confidence in her body. She told USA Today, “It’s not very glamorous. I just wanted it to be beautiful and soft and raw. I was actually on set. It was just me and a photographer, everybody cleared the room, and I actually felt really wonderful about myself. I do feel like after a year of going through all my ups and downs — and I’m assuming they’re going to continue to come my way — but I feel really great about myself, I feel really happy.”
