Beware of the Rays
UVA a.k.a ageing rays and UVB rays a.k.a burning rays are both harmful to our skin. UVA penetrates ddeeply into the skin and damage the protein structures that give our skin strength and support.
UVB stimulates the production of melanin in which overexposure can cause sunburnt skin.
There are two types of sunscreens – physical and chemical. The former is in the form of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide; they both reflect and scatter UV rays away from the skin. It’s generally non-irritating so it’s ideal for sensitive skin.
Chemical sunscreens absorb the UV and release the energy as heat. It contains ingredients such as avobenzone, oxybenzone and octocrylene.
Although most contain both physical and chemical, it always pays to check. The Sun Protectant Factor represents the products ability to shield against UVB rays so the higher the SPF, the longer a product will be able to prevent your skin from burning.
Prevention is key to avoid premature ageing. Overexposure to UVA causes reduction in skin firmness which leads to deep lines and wrinkles.
