New Zealand Fashion Week this year saw Aja Rock bursting out of a cake, impromptu runway dance parties, models taking the catwalk from port-a-loos, TRON inspired looks, new brand launches, the return of old favourites who haven’t shown in years and a string of international celebrities and media favourites gracing the week’s events.

The trends for the Autumn/Winter 2012 season were very much an extension of the current season with mustard yellows, Kelly green and navy blue all still making an appearance with styles that hark back to a more conservative period drawing inspiration from 1960s high necklines, panelled dresses and thin bow detail on necks. Some designers opted for the other end of the spectrum employing bright, bold colours and vastly oversized accessories like that of the MisteR range.

There was a particular emphasis on chiffon, leather, tartan and velvet throughout all designers with warm autumnal peaches, oranges and mustard yellows taking the catwalk along side a splatter of cobalt blues and kelly greens. Zambesi and WORLD opted for the brightest hues employing fluoro to offset their line.
Lonely Hearts, Salasai and Workshop all featured leather heavily in both traditional black and red (Lonely Hearts) hues while Helen Cherry opted for another take on animal hides with a wide range of (faux I hope Helen Cherry) fur garments adding opulence to the conservative line.

Along with the more conservative dressing, the signature cut-out detail of some brands, like Lonely Hearts, was shown on the backs of dresses and shirts. Only one designer didn’t follow suit with the other which was COOP, who took sultry to a new level by pairing their garments with lingerie and thigh-high stockings with suspenders.

Really playing up the use of colour was the Emma Manhart line, as seen in the New Generation Show, bringing quirk to the week with interesting shapes and overt use of colour - bright, bright colour. Of particular note was this yellow coat, crafted from two large circles with a centre slit to create a cape style winter coat with an eccentric twist.

Prints were also abundant with Ruby bringing abstract prints to the week with their Capital, Nightlight, Puddle, City and blue/green block prints and Whiri’s line also featuring their own unique prints. Salasai, MisteR and Workshop brought tartan back in force with a hefty line of tartan garments in both conservative and fun colours/ prints while Stolen Girlfriends Club kept animal print a mainstay in fashion for the coming year.
