This Is How Much You Should Be Peeing Per Day

If you’re one of those people who hold it in because you simply can’t be bothered to go to the toilet, this may be worth a read. Elle talked to Dr. Gina Sam, MD/MPH, director of the Mount Sinai Gastrointestinal Motility Center to find out how dangerous is it to hold your pee in.

If you pee only two or three times a day it means you’re dehydrated (Duh). If it’s very yellow or dark, you’re not drinking enough water.

How bad is it to hold it?

It’s the same thing with pooping. Some people have trouble if they hold their poop. They have trouble figuring out what to do when they’re ready to go, so they kind of confuse the muscles. I believe it’s the same thing with your urological system, where if you’re holding it all the time, you may confuse the muscles, or you may have urinary retention when you’re ready to go. It’s not a good idea.

When you’re dehydrated, you have a dry mouth and you may feel more tired. You also will probably feel lightheaded.

On average, you should be drinking eight glasses of water a day. The other guideline is if you weigh 100 pounds, you can have 50 ounces  to 100 ounces of water.

However, you can drink too much water. It can affect your electrolytes. Your sodium levels will be very low so you have to be careful about drinking over your weight level.

Let’s make sure we stay hydrated and pee regularly whenever your body tells you to! You’ll probably need to pee every one to two hours to get rid of the water but the kidney’s doing it’s job to get the electrolytes out, so you’ll be urinating a lot.
