Last week we covered off on some boutique luxury hotels but now let’s bring it down a notch, but that’s not to say you should slum it. Motels have been a staple in the Kiwi road trip since their arrival in the 1950s, taking travellers from Cape Reinga to Bluff and everywhere in between.
Fast forward to 2016 and gone are the days of motels simply being convenient pit stops along the way. Most recent year-on-year data for February, released by Statistics New Zealand, shows guest nights for motels have been on the rise since 2012.
If you are one of the thousands of Kiwis who are planning a holiday around New Zealand this year there are hundreds of motels to choose from. Booking.com has helped us by gathering a list of the funkiest and most luxe motels, from around New Zealand.
Auckland – Devonport Motel
Staying at Devonport Motel makes Auckland feel like just another small town along your road trip route. Fitting in perfectly with Devonport’s quaint village feel, this motel has light airy rooms and is less than twenty minutes away, by ferry, from the busy central city. While you are in the area indulge in a box of Devonport Chocolates and then spend a couple hours wandering around North Head the old naval base to burn off all the sugary goodness.
Palmerston North – Destiny of Fitzherbert
Possibly one of the most stylish motels in New Zealand, owners Brent and Stef have spent the last year refurbishing the motel to create luxurious rooms for travellers. A city with four museums to choose from, including the New Zealand Rugby museum, Palmerston North should definitely be a pit stop on your next road trip.
Martinborough – The Claremont Motel
The Claremont Motel has you set right amongst the vines, with the property sitting adjacent to the wine village. With Martinborough being home to some of the most stunning vineyards and best wine in the country, you will definitely need an over night stay.
Christchurch – Merivale Manor Motel
Merivale Manor Motel may look modern, however the house was built over 130 years ago in 1882. As old and new merge together as Christchurch is rebuilt, enjoy a bit of the old when wandering through Merivale’s ‘boutique-y’ shops and cafés. Or, check out Re:Start, the shopping precinct constructed of brightly coloured shipping containers.
Invercargill – Homestead Villa
Right down at the bottom of the South Island is Homestead Villa. This luxe motel is a perfect haven to park up at after a long drive (maybe even hop into one of the suite’s spa baths). When you’re up and ready to go again check out the Southland Museum and Art Gallery for your culture fix or the Otepuni Gardens for a dose of the Southland air.
