I’m four days out from my honeymoon and our first option was to head to Arrowtown in the South Island to a cute little quiet spot to recover from the wedding. Budgets however meant that we had to tone things back a bit and save the South Island for next year. Instead we’re going to escape to our batch at Waiheke and spend all the money we saved for flights on wineries instead. I think it’s a wise investment.

Notably these locations are almost exclusively off the beaten track. For a romantic week away together you really want to get away from the crowds and party beaches and just find a warm place to cuddle.
Only one of the recommended locations, Palm Cove in Australia, actually features an amazing beach. The others revolve around old European castles and cute cobbled streets. One of the recommended locations doesn’t stray from our shores though. Akaroa sits just to the east of Christchurch.
Founded 500 years ago the city, which is known for its lavish royal presence, was built among a number of artificial lakes. It’s known as the City Of Lakes or the Venice of the East. This city has a natural charm and tranquility which emits the very best of eastern romance.
Barichara’s soul is in calm and tranquility with its cobbled streets and colonial architecture. It’s often referred to as being “The Prettiest Town in Colombia”. Other than swanning around the village more active couples can get into paragliding and rafting in the neighboring San Gil
Not far from Cairns is the beach community of Palm Cove. In one direction you have barrier reef discoveries, the other you have rainforest excursions. When you out aren’t exploring together there are award winning resorts to stay in and restaurants to dine at.
You don’t need to go overseas to get away from daily life. Romance can be found right here in New Zealand. Get down to the South Island just a short trip from Christchurch and stay at Akaroa. Spot rare Hector’s dolphins and relax knowing your far away from busy city life. Walking tracks, cruises and sailing give you a chance to cleanse and detox.
In southern France is the commune of Collioure which has been described as charming and romantic. In fact it appears to be somewhat of a hidden gem, as it hasn’t been overrun by tourists, despite it being a standout by Mediterranean standards. From here you can daytrip to Spain or just relax and enjoy some wine on the waterfront.
