When talking to my health nut buddies I’m usually told that exercise does little to burn weight off, and that a lot of it’s going to be a diet change. But of course, things are never that simple, and there’s always the old mantra of “calories in calories out” right? If you’re not burning the energy you’re putting in, you’re going to hold onto it. It’s about an entire lifestyle change, not just diet or just fitness.
Findings published in the American Journal of Physiology — Endocrinology and Metabolism have dived back into looking at Irisin, the so-called “exercise hormone”, named due to it’s release into the body during exercise. The study for the first time looks into the exact mechanics of this hormone has upon fat cells, and how we may be able to tap into its effects further.
The study founds indications that Irisin plays a roll in fat burning as it activates a protein and cell responsible for turning white fat cells into brown cells. However the team led by Jun Yang, M.D. found that Irisin also suppresses fat-cell formation.

The idea of a pill is tempting though, and it’s been attempted before after a team headed by Bruce Spiegelman first discovered Irisin back in 2012 and published their findings in the journal Nature. He named the hormone after the Greek goddess Iris. Ever since its discovery it’s been a subject of much contention. In fact its very existence has been called into question.
In a follow up piece of research in the journal Cell Metabolism Spiegelman used mass spectrometry to measure Irisin in human blood. But while biologists knock heads and pharmaceutical companies pour money into prospects, we just need to get up out of our chairs and make a lifestyle change.
