Alicia Keys has started a makeup-free revolution and every woman in the world is silently fist-pumping
I’m not going to lie, I love a good dusting of glitter eye shadow or a bright pop of lip colour as much as, if not more, than the next girl.
But like many women who wear makeup, some days I really just want to hurl my collection of MAC lipsticks out of the window, smash my severely overpriced Chanel bronzer and just generally throw my middle finger up to the entire beauty industry – yes that was a Lemonade reference, if you got it we can be friends.
Apparently Alicia Keys feels exactly the same way and is doing something about it.
“I don’t want to cover up anymore,” Alicia Keys wrote in Lenny Letter last month as she began the #nomakeup movement.
Since then Keys has been walking the walk, going make-up free at the BET Awards, on an Italian television show, on Saturday Night Live and at various other A-list events.
While the fresh-faced trend has been around for awhile now with various celebs posting no-makeup selfies from time-to-time, it has always been fleeting.
Keys however is downright serious about the movement she has started and is passionate about the fact that women should feel confident enough to go natural without fear of being judged.
As Keys explains, in a world that is obsessed with perfection there is something incredibly beautiful about just being yourself.
Recalling the first time she was photographed without makeup Keys says that, “I swear it is the strongest, most empowered, most free, and most honestly beautiful that I have ever felt… I hope to God it’s a revolution.”
Reflecting on my 19 year old self when my very first album, #SongsInAMinor, dropped, 15 years ago today!! WOW!! Look how far we’ve come! Thanks for joining me on this incredible ride! I love y’all 4 REAL!!! ??? I’ll see you tonight 8pm EST / 5pm PST at the #BETAwards #InCommon ?
