After a night of sleep your body becomes dehydrated and in this state, your brain is not able to function at its full capacity.

“One of the biggest indicators of lethargy or low energy is that you are dehydrated,” says Rania Batayneh, nutritionist and author of The One One One Diet. “Because water aids in both body regulation and brain function, it is also closely related to balancing out our moods.” Ice water essentially “shocks the body” and can “boost your alertness and low energy levels.”

Not only does water kickstart your brain, but drinking a set amount of water as soon as you wake up in the morning is also extremely effective in  helping to boost your metabolism. “Think of drinking water after waking up as an alarm clock for your metabolism,” writes health expert Sean Russel. “This morning water kick starts your metabolism and has been proven to increase your calorie burning potential throughout the day.”

While many of us reach for our cup of coffee first thing in the morning, coffee actually dehydrates you even more, making it one of the worst things to drink early in the morning. So if you want to boost your productivity and your metabolism right from the get-go, keeping a glass of water right next to your bed could be a game changer.
