I know sleeping is meant to be easy, but honestly, sometimes falling asleep is near impossible. According to experts, struggling to sleep can be associated with a number of issues, including stress, anxiety, an overactive brain, too much energy, or even staring at your phone before you try to sleep. The good news is that it is actually possible to teach yourself how to fall asleep really quickly – within one minute to be exact.
After struggling to sleep during a particularly stressful time in her life, Alina Gonzalez of Byrdie started hunting for a way to sleep easy and was advised to try the “4-7-8” breathing trick. “You simply breathe in through your nose for four seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds, and exhale through your mouth for eight seconds,” wrote Gonzalez.
Gonzalez who was given this advice by a licensed wellness practitioner, says that the breathing exercise works so well because the combination of numbers “has a chemical-like effect on our brains and would slow my heart rate and soothe me right to sleep that night.”
Gonzalez says that the breathing trick was so effective that often she would fall asleep within a number of seconds. “To my complete disbelief, I woke up the next morning unable to even remember getting to the eighth second of the exhale because it knocked me out that fast,” she wrote.
While Gonzalez says that she can’t guarantee it will work the same for everyone, she highly recommends giving it a try because it has changed her sleep life. “It is now what I use to fall asleep every single night, and each morning, I’m amazed at how well it worked!”
