The Key Trends To Invest In For Summer, According To A Fashion Insider

Summer is fast approaching and as the sun comes out, many of us are moving our winter coats and sweaters to the back of the closet and getting ourselves reacquainted with our old summer staples. In search of what is hot in fashion for this season, we spoke to Kelly Chismon, fashion insider and womenswear buyer at Smith + Caughey’s, to get the rundown on what we should be investing in this season.

This season denim is at the forefront of fashion, with summer denim making a big splash in the fashion world. “This season denim is all about the raw edge hem and distressing to different degrees depending how brave you are,” Kelly says. ” You can go a little or all out – your choice.  Denim is more washed back and the lighter blue is a favourite of mine.”

Every season has trending colours and according to Kelly, summer is no exception. “The colour khaki and powder blue are featuring really strongly, so introduce this in your wardrobe somehow. I love a good white shirt – wear with your denim and paired with sneakers creates a summer fresh look.”

The staple piece

Summer is all about effortless style and when it comes to looking great, you can’t go past a staple dress that you can wear on all occasions. Following in the footsteps of past seasons, the slip dress is still a must-have. “The slip dress is so easy to wear this can be worn so many different ways – make this look your own,” says Kelly.

Looking to add a little something extra to your outfit? Kelly says that you can’t go past the big necklace trends that are dominating street style right now. ” Leather chokers especially in neutral colours are a fave of mine again,” she says. “Also layering your necklaces is also a really feminine look.”

Shoes go ’90s to the extreme this season, with some of our favourite shoe styles from yesteryear returning. “Slip-on mules, sling back block heels and sneakers are my pick for the season,” Kelly says.
