As well as being the month of Halloween and welcoming in warmer weather, October also brings along the start of Auckland’s social season. The 28th of October will see people flock to Ellerslie Race Course for their Whips n Spurs party.
Along with enjoying a day of champagne, horses and socialising it’s also the perfect excuse to put your glad rags on with all your friends. Finding the perfect dress for the races can be a task and half, but we’re here to help make race day fashion that little bit easier.
What to wear to the races:
The races are the perfect excuse to go all out and put on your fanciest attire. It’s a time for elegance and sophistication – think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. You’ll want to wear a dress, heels, hat and jewelry.
Floral dresses are always a popular choice for race day attire. A white dress with a bright or pastel floral pattern always looks sophisticated and is a great choice for the Spring time. If you choose a floral dress it also makes it easier to find a fascinator or hat to match with any of the colours of the flowers.
Statement or extra sparkly jewelry is also a great choice. If your dress is one block colour some jewelry can really help to take your outfit to the next level of fancy. Statement earrings are a great choice if your hair is up so that they can really be shown off.
For shoes and open toe is a good choice for Spring and Summer time races. Plus it gives you a good excuse to show off a pedicure! Nude and white heels are very popular at the moment and look good with almost any dress, if you are more worried about grass and dirt though black heels are also a safe classic to stick with.
If you want to stand out from the crowd you can try wearing a jumpsuit or two piece coordinate at the races. There are some many classy elegant jumpsuits available out there. Again, sticking with a floral pattern is a great way to go. We love the way this asymmetric jumpsuit looks.
Whips N Spurs is happening on the 28th of October with gates opening at 11am and closing at 8pm. Tickets start at $55pp. For extra info check out the Ellerslie racing website.
