Sometimes it feels like there just isn’t enough time in a day to sit down and meditate. When you’re stressed out but still have to be on the go you often need a quicker fix. Well luckily, there are ways you can relieve your stress in a matter of seconds, and all you need is a pair of lungs and your breath.
A new study has shown that just a few slow breaths can help to reduce your stress. Scientists found that a small group of neurons in the brain connect breathing to our state of mind. So, if you’re breathing too fast it could be contributing to your stress levels, while slowing it down will have a relaxing effect.
Mark Krasnow, the lead author of the study stated that the study was “intriguing” as it finally showed the scientific reasoning behind breathing exercises and how they work.
The best thing about this is you can try it right now, no matter where you are. Take in a few deep breaths and observe how you feel afterwards. There are a lot of great breathing exercises available online to experiment with.
However, one of the most simple and effective way seems to be taking at least three big deep breaths. In through the nose and out through the mouth. It also helps to count the seconds while you do this to help regulate your breathing.
Deep breathing can be done at any time and anywhere. They can also to help to reduce pain and fear so can be great to use while you’re sitting at the dentist’s or doctor’s.
