If You Are Always Tired You Need To Snack On These Things

Your eyelids are sagging, shoulders are starting to drop and all you want to do is brew a cup of coffee the size of your face – it must be 3PM! Rather than curl up under your desk or in the printer room, it it time to find some afternoon snacks that are going to beat be tired. After all, it is no surprise we are exhausted even when we do get the recommend eight hours sleep in todays society. There are thousands of things we have to think about every day, in fact a recent study found that we make 35,000 decisions a day!

Before we make any more decisions, like where to nap, grab yourself one of the following snacks.

Roasted edamame.

Keri Gans, Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist and author of The Small Change Diet spoke to Women’s Health and said this is her favorite energy-boosting food. “It’s very high in fiber and very high in protein.” The trick to making these taste delicious is to cook them with a sprinkle of sea-salt and pepper. Gans recommends a ¼ cup serving.

Green tea

If you can’t go past your afternoon coffee, reach for a green tea instead. According to The Today Show Green Tea has just enough caffeine to “boost production of the hormone adrenocorticotropin” this then triggers the release of cortisol, which helps respond to stress and regulates/modulates blood sugar levels. Australian scientists told The Today Show that it also contains EGCG, which promotes focus and calmness. The trick, grab a glass about 90 minutes before you need it to kick in. “Green tea takes longer to hit than coffee does,” Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S., author of The 150 Most Effective Ways to Boost Your Energy said.

Complex carbs

Not only do these carbs fill you up more, but they give you more energy. The best way to incorporate these into your diet it by making simple substitutes in your lunch, for example swap white rice for brown rice or potatoes for kumara or white bread for mixed grain bread.

Fruit and almonds

Possibly the perfect afternoon snack, these are the best duo. Grab yourself an apple, orange or banana and a small handful of almonds and you have yourself a snack packed with copper, vitamin C and manganese.

If all else fails, get outside and be active.
