While diet trends come and go, laying down conflicting laws on what you can and cannot eat, there’s one growing movement that shies away from telling you which foods to eat or how much, and rather focusses on the art of eating with attention and intention – allowing yourself the mental space to discover the needs of your own body and how food can can complement them. It’s called mindful eating.
Intrigued? Here’s a few of the principles behind this novel approach to health and nutrition:
1. Awareness of Current Mind/Body State
If you don’t know your own body, how can you know what’s good for it? The key here is to be present in yourself, so you can make fully informed choices about the foods that you consume.
2. Choosing Food for Nutrition and Enjoyment
Usually we opt for just one or the other: food that’s good for us, or food that makes us happy. But core to the concept of mindful eating is the idea that those two don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
3. Using All Your Senses to Select Food
We rely heavily on our sight for so many things that it’s easy to forget that we have a range of other senses. When you choose food to eat, try to use as many senses as possible in your decision, to get a better picture of whether it’s what your body wants/needs.
4. Acknowledge Responses to Food Without Judgement
This principle is essentially about being truthful with yourself. If you don’t like a certain food, that’s okay. If you love the taste of something but feel that you shouldn’t, just acknowledge to yourself what your real opinion is.
5. Eat for Optimal Satisfaction and Satiety
How many times have you gone on eating, long after you were full? Or went hungry in order to lose weight? Mindful eating calls for eating the amount that makes you feel satisfied and no longer hungry.
Only time will tell whether Mindful Eating will prove just another fad, but we found many of the principles had a ring of common sense about them and are certainly going to try a few next time it comes to choosing a meal.
