Clean desk, clean life

Cleaning up your desk on a Friday afternoon is a bit like giving your future-self a special gift. Come Monday morning, it’s likely you’ll show up to work feeling all where-did-the-weekend-go and before you’ve even sat down you’ll have cast your eyes upon the beauty that will be your freshly organised desk.

Studies have shown that a cluttered environment restricts your ability to focus. The study published in the Journal of Neuroscience sets out to show the relationship between uncluttered and organised living. The research showed clutter limits your brain’s ability to process information: basically it makes you distracted and unable to process information as well as you would in an uncluttered and serene environment.

Using MRI imaging and other physiological measurement tools, the study’s scientists mapped the brain’s responses to organised and disorganised stimuli while monitoring task performance. They concluded if you want to focus to the best of your ability and process information as effectively as possible, you need to clear the clutter from your home and work environment. Other findings from the study showed those who do were less irritable, more productive, distracted less often and able to process information better.

You probably can’t get all Marie Kondo about it  (her particular method of decluttering known as ‘KonMari’). It’s the latest trend among declutters and basically gets you to ask yourself if each item you own brings you joy but you can still reap the rewards of a tidy workspace even if all you do is clear your space of excess paper and a few dirty coffee cups. If you’re feeling inspired get out the Spray and Wipe and get rid of the week’s crumbs and other accumulated detritus.

We’ve added some Insta inspo as well just in case you need some office-space tidying-up motivation.

Work space inspiration.
