According to a new study revealed by Business of Fashion, the style of the tote bag has been suffering. Handbag businesses in general have slowed to record lows. Kors Chief Executive Officer John Idol said that young customers are still buying handbags and leather goods but they are now purchasing small cross-body bags and lower-priced large wallets instead of big, expensive bags.
“There’s been this myth that no one is buying handbags anymore, but really it’s a change in trend away from the big totes everyone was buying a few years ago to smaller bags that don’t cost as much,” said Dorothy Lakner, a New York-based analyst at Topeka Capital Markets.
It’s definitely worth having one or two big totes in your wardrobe for practicality reasons. However, the new trend of modestly sized and priced bags are complementing our need to make things smaller and thinner. Take your keys, lipgloss, cards, breath freshening spray and hand sanitizer in a wrist wallet and you’re out the door!
