Following on from last week LeeAnn Yare shares with us a few more tips for celebrating every space in your home, in the wake of her must-have book, Rooms to Love. This week LeeAnn looks at what can be done with your outdoor spaces, and explains how your bathroom and laundry room can have as much life and personality as any other home space.
Just because your bathroom, en suite or laundry falls into the service room category doesn’t mean you can’t decorate it with the same thoughtfulness, creativity and fun as any other room of the house.
There is nothing more iconic about a New Zealand summer than entertaining on the deck with friends. While we all love the idea of a huge Kiwi back lawn, in reality our homes often cover a large percentage of our sections, so something more low-maintenance might be better suited if you’re working with smaller spaces. Hard surfaces can be multipurpose, from entertaining and dining to kids riding skateboards and scooters or building huts. Soften the edges with plenty of lush green planting. A hedge is an easy way of creating a fabulous green backdrop to any space; plant it first and it will be well established by the time the rest of the stages are completed.
Just because your bathroom, en suite or laundry falls into the service room category doesn’t mean you can’t decorate it with the same thoughtfulness, creativity and fun as any other room of the house. Think outside the square – there are no rules. A vintage table or butcher’s block makes a great vanity; wallpaper adds a punch of colour and pattern; pendant lights that won’t be ruined by steam work as well in the bathroom as in any other room. Get clever with your storage – estimate what you think you need, then double it!
