Virsaviya ‘Bathsheba’ Borun-Goncharova suffers from Pentalogy of Cantrell, a rare congenital condition that occurs around 5.5 per one million live births. Babies with the condition are born with vital organs on the outside of their bodies. 6-year-old Virsaviya, originally from Russia, now resides in South Florida with her mother. Her heart and intestines are outside of her chest and abdomen – covered only by a thin layer of skin.
As her heart is not protected by the ribcage, a small bump can become fatal. Virsaviya’s mother Dari Borun found a doctor at Boston’s Children’s Hospital who is willing to treat her disorder. However, she can not be operated on for at least another two years due to her high blood pressure.
Despite Dari being told that her child would never survive, Virsaviya is fighting and beating those odds. There is a crowdfunding page to help fund her treatment for Bathsheba’s Heart.
