Adrienne Keene, author of the blog Native Appropriations made aware via Twitter the rather awkwardly sexist summary of Pocahontas on Netflix.
This has garnered backlash for portraying Native American women negatively. The male protagonists in Disney films are usually portrayed as heroes whilst Pocahontas is merely reduced to a woman who pines after a man with no mention of how she prevented a war between settlers and natives.
You can read Keene’s explanation on her blog here.
Netflix responded to Keen in an email:
“Thanks for bringing attention to this synopsis. We do our best to accurately portray the plot and tone of the content we’re presenting, and in this case you were right to point out that we could do better. The synopsis has been updated to better reflect Pocahontas’ active role and to remove the suggestion that John Smith was her ultimate goal.”
