SOHO Launches Gold-Winning Riesling That Claims “Trophy For Champion” Award

SOHO Wines has launched ‘Betty’, a much demanded ‘lifestyle’ riesling that is slightly lighter in its alcohol level. Despite its lower 9.4% in alcohol, ‘Betty’ still packs a punch with full flavour and body.

Most people take to a riesling in expectation of overwhelming sweetness which can be quite sickening. To our delightful surprise, ‘Betty’ comprises a crispness that balances well with its sweet tones. The penetrating aromatics of lemon and lime, pineapple, grapefruit and pear makes for a decadant thirst quencher with soft acidity and a delicate sweetness. It has a very long fruity, zesty and white floral finish.

It’s a perfect bottle to take to a dinner party as it goes great with seafood, Asian or Indian chicken dishes and of course, on its own or with a sweet treat. It has a certain youthful elegance that makes it great to drink from 11am in the comfort of your own home while lounging in the sun.

Bottled in August this year, SOHO’s champion Betty Riesling was crafted by Waiheke Island based winemaker James Rowan with grapes from the ‘Jomara’ vineyard in Malborough. He says, “I’m excited by this wine. There are enticing taunts of lemon sorbet and grilled limes and a lush palate with a hint of grapefruit spice. It’ delectable, balanced and vivacious.”

To no surprise, ‘Betty’ blew the wine judges away last month at the New Zealand International Wine Show. At the largest wine competition in the country, ‘Betty’ won Gold and beat all the other rieslings (including higher alcohol rieslings) to the Champion trophy.

Light yet luscious Spatlese look-alike with juicy apple, citrus and tropical guava and a river-stone mystique. Simply delicious, shimmery and thirst quenching.

Trophy for Champion Riesling

This is light on its feet yet full of delectable flavours. Fabulous aromas of lemon meringue, mango, lime zest and floral lead to a vibrant palate that is lively and refreshing with elegant sweetness, perfectly balanced by juicy acidity. The wine combines youthful charm and elegance with superb fruit concentration and freshness, making it irresistible to drink any time of the day.

Founded by Rachael Carter in 2009, SOHO Wines uses fruit from family-owned vineyards in Malborough, Central Otago and Waiheke Island.

Responding to the recent changes to New Zealand’s drink-driving laws, there is a huge demand for lower alcohol wines. ‘Betty’ caters to the need for us to still enjoy a glass while being responsible on our alcohol consumption.

The Land Transport Amendment Act (no 2) 2014 has lowered the drink-driving limits for adult drivers from 400 mcg of alcohol per litre of breath to 250 mcg. The blood alcohol limit has also reduced from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg. The NZ Police says two standard drinks for men or one for women in the first hour is a guide for safe drinking before driving. However, it depends on every individual.

SOHO’s Betty Malborough Light Riesling is available from Glengarry WInes, Farro Fresh, selected New World stores and independent retailers. RRP $24.
