WATCH: China’s “Leftover Women” Talk About Single-Shaming After 25 Years Old

In China, unmarried women over the age of 25 are referred to as sheng nu, meaning “leftover woman.” The new video for SK-11’s Change Destiny campaign reveals the stigma.

“In Chinese culture, respecting your parents is the most important quality, and not getting married is like the biggest sign of disrespect,” one woman says. Parents look for a solution by attending the marriage market in Shanghai’s People’s Park with ads. They post their sons’ and daughters’ profiles, in effect selling their children off.

Watch the video and try not to shed a tear. My goodness this is heartbreaking.
