Your Say – Denise Faraco

Designer, co-founder of brand performance specialist agency Tricky, and owner of jewellery brand Little Darling Co.

I’d name my autobiography…

Learn as you go.

To me success means…

When my three kids are happily asleep in bed at the same time!

Best advice I’ve been given…

The only behaviour you can change is your own.

I made my first dollar:

Selling drawings of Snoopy to my classmates when I was 8 years old.

Life motto:

Keep curious

Favourite book:

So many! But one that I cherish is Einstein’s Dreams, by Alan Lightman. Or any book by Oliver Sacks.

My goals for 2019 are…

Keep growing both my businesses. And, because it’s easy to get caught in the daily grind of ticking to do lists, I want to have more fun with my favourite people.

The women who inspire me:

Are witty, curious and restless.

The gender stereotype I can’t stand:

“I need to be a superwoman”. We need to be kinder to ourselves and step away from such high expectations.

The main challenge for women in business is…

Maternity. It’s still seen as an excuse to dismiss women for potential jobs.

We need pay equality because…

It’s a no brainer. Same job, same pay.

Gender diversity in the workplace is….

Statistically natural: women make up at least 50% of the population. Just like with immigration, different backgrounds bring fresh ideas and different perspectives.

I advocate for change by…

Both my husband and I make sure we treat our boys and girl the same way and give them opportunities to explore activities that have nothing to do with being a boy or a girl. They don’t know any different, so hopefully gender equality will be hardwired in their little minds.

The change I want to see in 2019 is…

Given the latest tragedy in Christchurch, I would say less radicalism and more respect to different cultures. There’s a lot of messages around that we should all love each other. It’s hard to love what you don’t know or understand. Let’s start with respect.
